Last class we discussed what blogs are. We worked on the following questions:

Have you read a blog before? Do you have a favorite blog. Share your favorites if you have some. What do you notice about blog format? What’s the writing like? What about the use of photos and other images? How does a blogger make a blog unique? How can blogs help you improve your command of English?

You were supposed to search the web for three blogs related to something you like very much or your field of expertise. Write a post on your blog about it? add images and links to your choice of blogs.

Course Description

This course focuses on classroom activities, during which students will discuss, read, listen to and write on particular topics together. Ideally, the course will enable students to develop and express their own insights and experience with respect to different aspects of the English as a foreign language. At the same time the course wants to integrate technology as a way to help students in their multiliteracy development and the learning of a new language.

Course Objectives
1. To encourage students’ critical thinking on the relationship between language and culture.
2. To encourage students' oral and written exchange and interaction
3. To use web 2.0 tools to learn EFL and multiliteracies.
4. To participate in international collaboration communities or social networks.

Evaluation Criteria＆Grading
First term= 10 + 10 pts 30%
Second term= 10 + 10 pts 30%
Project presentations + Attendance, Homework, Quizzes and Class participation = 10 + 10 pts 40%
** Bonus tasks get extra credits

Course Requirement＆ Attendance Policies
1. Active participation in classroom discussions and activities is expected from all students.
2. Cell phones and beepers should be turned off in class.
3. Being more than 15 minutes late will be counted as an absence.
4. More than three unexcused absences will result in a failing grade.
5. No make-up presentations will be permitted, except in case of documented emergency.

How to make a mind map

For our project we should use mind maps to visualize what we want to communicate. This is what Wikipedia define as a Mind map:

A mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged around a central key word or idea. Mind maps are used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and as an aid to studying andorganizing information, solving problems, making decisions, writing and speaking.The elements of a given mind map are arranged intuitively according to the importance of the concepts, and are classified into groupings, branches, or areas, with the goal of representing semantic or other connections between portions of information. Welcome, everybody!

This new trimester, we will be learning in a blended connected way. But what is that? you may be asking yourself. Well, let's try to explain what it is about. To start with:

If you can't come to classes, you can connect at home or wherever you have access to a computer and Internet.
You need to get a google account, since we will using different tools provided by Google. make sure to register to Gmail, Google Reader, Google Talk, Google Doc, and Blogger
Blogs are going to be your personal journals. There you will register everything we do in class. All your homework and tasks should be there.
Every class will be a taken as a workshop or TALLER. Try not to miss your classes and if you do, keep your blog updated.
Homework will be assigned for each one of the units covered in class. The dateline to hand in your homework will be the day of your test. It means you will have the chance to work on your blog till the exam day.
Corrections to writing will be done through Google documents and with the help of tutors.. try to get one.. Go to Bloque F and meet our tutors. .or find a friend that watn to help you-

Russian Venezuelan Project!

There should be 6 meetings every week starting next week. Let me know if it is not convenient for you or your students.

1st meeting: Getting to know each other. Interviewing about family/friends, personal likes/dislikes, character traits.

2nd meeting: Compare Venezuela and Russia: climate, cities, people, myths and stereotypes, why you are proud of your country, 3 things you like and 3 things you dislike about your country, places that are worth visiting

3rd meeting: Students' Daily Routine: typical working day, ways to relax, typical problems of a student, what you like and dislike of your being a student, opportunities for students

4th meeting: Home and Food: house/flat in your country - how people live, national cuisine, exchange a recipe, what food is popular, fast food and attitude to it

5th meeting: Hobbies: popular hobbies in the country, what books you read, what films you watch, what music you listen to (may be exchange some tracks), what sites you like on the web

6th meeting: Active Life: a sport you like to do or to watch, popular sport in the country, fans, extreme sports, dancing as a sport and as a hobby.

A project proposal...

Well, we got invited to do something out of the ordinary... This is going to be our final project for this level. How would you like making friends with a Russian EFL student?.... Read the following project proposal from Professor Olga Scheglova, from Omsk:

Dear Doris and students,

I'm Olga Scheglova, an English teacher from Omsk, Siberia, Russia. I visited your presentation at CO2011 and really liked it.

I thought that if you are interested, we could have a joint project with our students. The idea of the project is crosscultural communication. It is an opportunity to practice their speaking and writing in English, to learn more about people from another country (some of them are studying Spanish at the moment) and to introduce more technology in their lives.

My students are 17-18 y.o., there are 14 of them, their English level is intermediate (Some have upper-intermediate, some have pre-intermediate). They started learning English at school and now they continue to become translators.

The project can be as following: we pair up the students, first thay exchange e-mails and discuss when it is convenient for them to meet online. Then every 2 weeks they have a topic/ a question they have to ask their foreign partner in skype. After each conversation they write a report in a blog/forum about what they have learned. Also they are encouraged to read and comment each other's reports. The final product can be a presentation "Now I know that in Venezuela/Russia..."

I wonder if the idea seems interesting to you. I'm looking forward to your answer.

Welcome, everybody!

This new trimester, we will be working with The Speaking Group. But what is that? you may be asking yourself. Well, let's try to explain what it is about. To start with:

It is mostly about learning and practicing your English.
It is about learning English by talking about different topics. You will be reading, listening to, writing and talking about different topics in English.
It is about learning English using technology. That means we will be using computers and internet to find real updated information concerning your different interests. We are going to experiment and play with new ways to learn autonomously. Learning for life. Learning to learn. Learning by doing. We will watching and listening to videos as well as making videos. We'll have the chance to use different tools to express our ideas and interact with people.
It is about learning and practicing your English in groups, in community. Be ready to meet students and teachers from the university and the world. Of course, there will be tasks you must complete on your own.

That was a general description of the course. Now, how the classes take place:

Classes are going to be held at the lab. I f you can't come to classes, you can connect at home or wherever you have access to a computer and Internet.
You need to get a google account, since we will using different tools provided by Google. make sure to register to Gmail, Google Reader, Google Talk, Google Doc, and Blogger
Blogs are going to be your personal journals. There you will register everything we do in class. All your homework and tasks should be there.
Every class will be a taken as a workshop or TALLER. Try not to miss your classes and if you do, keep your blog updated.
Homework will be assigned for each one of the units covered in class. The dateline to hand in your homework will be the day of your test. It means you will have the chance to work on your blog till the exam day.
Corrections to writing will be done through Google documents.

Things you need to do to take this class:

Get a Gmail account and register to Google services: reader, Google talk, reader and blogger.
Get a blog at Blogger. For instructions on how to that get the power point presentation from our box or follow the tutorial prepared by Vance Stevens.
Benchmarks:
At the end of this class. I should have:
- Read my class guidelines
- Met my new classmates
- Worked with the introductory task
- Registered at Google and have a Gmail account.
- Registered to Google readers.
- Registered to Google doc.
- Downloaded Google Talk and activated my IM.
- Downloaded Answers.com alt+ click software to my computer.
- Opened my Blogger account and posted my first entry.

What is a Meme?
Here there are some definitions:
A meme is:

An idea that, like a gene, can replicate and evolve.

A unit of cultural information that represents a basic idea that can be transferred from one individual to another, and subjected to mutation, crossover and adaptation.

A meme (pronounced /mēːm/) consists of any unit of cultural information, such as a practice or idea, that gets transmitted verbally or by repeated action from one mind to another.

This a meme I found when I visited my friend Bertha's blog. We are going to experiment with our first meme... so here it goes.... I answered these questions about my life and I am going to pass them to some of you... later you will pass those same questions to 3 more classmates you would like to know more about.

What were you doing 10 years ago?
Ten years ago... 2008 now... so that was 1998. I was in my last year at LUZ and having my practice classes at Liceo Escolastico Andrades in Mcbo. I had already gotten married and was pregnant with my first son Leslie Enrique.

5 things you have to do today:
Today, I have two of my classes to teach.. I am also teaching teacher Patricia Charles's class. I have to go to the pharmacy to buy some medication for chicken pox. My son got it from my little son.

Snacks I enjoy…

I love chocolate. Specially Nutella. my favorite snack is to have nutella with bread.

Things I would do if I were a billionaire:

I would buy a house for my mom and another one for me. I would donate some of the money to a children or elderly institution and probably start my own language school. Of course, i will go on a vacation to a exotic place like Fiji.

Three of my bad habits:

Being strong headed sometimes... working too much...

5 places I have lived:

I haven't lived in many places... I lived in Ciudad Ojeda and Anaco once.

Now, visit Bardwell Road Center Podcast and listen to some of its programs. They are good model you can follow to record your own podcast.

1. You will need:
mp3 recorder. You can use your phone, mp3 player or a program called audacity.

2. After the shows are ready, upload your mp3 files to Imeeem. Register there and get the code to post it in your blog.

3. Make a power point presentation of the making of the podcast. Record your voice describing what happened during the podcast recording and upload it to your blog. You can upload your powerpoint to authorstream. Get the code and paste it back in your blog.

Environment... what a great word... environment is everywhere... Looking after our environment means we are caring for and keeping clean the place where we live. The planet and what's happening in it, should be everybody♥s concern.

In this unit, we discuss environmental issues, find out how we are helping to hurt our planet and finally think of ways to go green and awaken our ecological spirit.

Beauty is commonly defined as a characteristic present in a person, place, object or idea that provides a perceptual experience of pleasure, meaning or satisfaction to the mind or to the eyes, arising from sensory manifestations such as a shape, color, personality, sound, design or rhythm.[1] Beauty is studied as part of aesthetics, sociology, social psychology and culture. Beauty, as a cultural creation, is also extremely commercialized. Beauty is a common form of chemistry, mixing chemicals together to create the perfect element. This contrast when beauty can be inner beauty, when one expresses deep sense of self.
The subjective experience of "beauty" often involves the interpretation of some entity as being in balance and harmony with nature, which may lead to feelings of attraction and emotional well-being. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" is a common phrase attributed to this concept.[2]
In its most profound sense, beauty may engender a salient experience of positive reflection about the meaning of one's own existence. An "object of beauty" is anything that reveals or resonates with personal meaning. Hence religious and moral teachings often focus on the divinity and virtue of beauty, and to assert natural beauty as an aspect of a spirituality and truth.
